Workshops & Events

Blue Borage composting and edible gardening workshops are a super way to learn about organic gardening while socialising with like-minded people.

Popular topics include composting, worm farming, seed sowing, container gardening, basic biodynamics, edible flowers and growing microgreens. All taught from the perspective of a biodynamic practitioner using no synthetic fertilisers, no toxic pesticides or fungicides, avoiding plastic, and encouraging a hyperlocal circular food system.

Here's a selection of classes currently on offer. Scroll on down the list to see some past events that may spark an idea for your workplace or community. Sometimes the best starting place is a 1:1 consultation in your own garden - more information on that service is here

Summer Workshops

Fruit Tree Guilds: a home orchard workshop in Te Atatu South

When: Saturday 16th January (10am-12pm)
Where: Address to be given upon registration. It's a home garden in Te Atatu South

Marlies Dorrestein is hosting this event, were I will teach how to to grow a wide range of beneficial herbs in your orchard. This is often described as creating a 'fruit tree guild', but really, even if you don't have an orchard these plants are super companions in any garden.

We'll stir some biodynamic CPP (Cow Pat Pit) to give the plants a good start after being transplanted, so you'll get an experience of the biodynamic stirring process.

Finally, we'll also make this a crop swap gathering - bring your surplus herbs, seedlings, produce, seeds - anything you feel like sharing. We're hoping everyone will go home with a box of goodies for their garden.

How to book: Marlies is handling the bookings. Katrina can connect you by phone/Messenger/Instagram or email. text Katrina at 022-410-4988 or email katrina@blueborage.co.nz if you'd like to attend.

The Auckland Women's Centre

Date & Time: Wednesdays 11am-12pm (resuming in February)

Location: The Auckland Women's Centre, 4 Warnock St, Grey Lynn. [Women only for this venue]

This is a relaxed space to gather and garden - perfect if you have questions to ask in person, or if you feel like getting your hands in the soil in the middle of the week. If there are seedlings, herb or seed raising mix you'd like to purchase I can put together a custom order for you - just send an email or a text the day before so I can get the car packed up with exactly what you need.
Email: katrina@blueborage.co.nz Text: 022-410-4988.

Future topic requests always welcome: container gardening, worm farming, seed sowing, DIY Potting mix, Composting, edible flowers, herb gardening...

Note: if the weather is horrid the in person session will probably not go ahead. Refunds are simple via Eventbrite - just request it before the workshop starts. In the case of wet weather, I will record the planned content as a zoom session and send a recording to everyone who has not requested a refund.

MUMG is one of the more prolific community gardening projects in Auckland, and it's a privilege to be invited to come and teach a class with them. This was a super opportunity for the surrounding community to pop in and see what Jason and the team have been up to, and see what other workshops he has planned for the growing season.

Date & Time:  Sunday November 1st (10:30am-12:30pm) teaching Hugelkultur for small spaces. I also installed an in ground worm farm in the container garden we built, and walked through some basics of the biodynamic moon calendar.
